The Melvyn M. Gelch, M.D. Fund for Advanced Training Of Neurological Residents
The Melvyn M. Gelch, M.D. Fund for Advanced Training of Neurosurgical Residents at Rhode Island Hospital (“The Melvyn M. Gelch, M.D. Fund”) launched in September 2006 by Mrs. Joan Gelch to honor the late Dr. Melvyn Gelch. This endowment fund serves to create an annual program to provide neurosurgical residents with intensive training in state-of-the-art advances in neurosurgery, an area of vital importance to Dr. Gelch.

The Melvyn M. Gelch, M.D. Fund will offer senior Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University Neurosurgical resident, per year, the opportunity to receive one or two weeks of advanced, specialized training in neurosurgery at a distinguished institution or specified location. Depending upon the resident’s area of interest, the recipient can choose to gain advanced knowledge and expertise in areas such as pediatric neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, movement disorder surgery, neurovascular surgery, spinal instrumentation, neuroendoscopy or stereotactic surgery at distinguished institutions such as the Institute of Neurology at Queen Square, University of London, the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University, CyberKnife® training at Accuray, or training in neurosurgery in a Third World country.

Dr. Dewan is this year's recipient of the Melvyn M. Gelch Award.

Christopher Demers, M.D.
Dr. Demers traveled to England where he completed an intensive course at the world-renowned Institute of Neurology, University College London at Queen Square.
2009
Thomas W. Belknap, M.D.
Dr. Belknap attended the International 28th Course for Percutaneous Endoscopic Spinal Surgery and Complimentary Minimal Invasive Techniques at the Bethania Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland
2008
Michael K. Park, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Park traveled to France where he spent two weeks working with Jean Régis, M.D. at the Assistance Publique L’Hopital d’Adulte de la Timone, Marseille, France.
Dr. Regis is a neurosurgeon in Marseille, France, in charge of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and Gamma Knife Unit. Dr. Park was able to observe and attend Dr. Regis’ clinics and operative sessions that included gamma knife procedures, epilepsy and DBS surgeries.

Marc A. Goldman, M.D.
Dr. Goldman traveled to Lima, Peru to train with a team of neurosurgeons at the Children’s Hospital where he participated in complex pediatric neurosurgical cases.
