
Samuel H. Greenblatt, M.D. - Research Interests
Before he became a physician, Dr. Greenblatt earned a master’s degree
at the Johns Hopkins Institute of the History of Medicine. His scholarly
work has centered on the history of neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroscience.
Dr. Greenblatt has investigated the social, behavioral, and economic
forces that led to the rise of neuroscience and neurosurgery. He was
senior editor of the comprehensive book, A History of Neurosurgery
in its Scientific and Professional Contexts. He has written about
John Hughlings Jackson, the neurologist who laid the framework for our
understanding of neural organization, and Harvey Cushing, the father
of modern neurosurgery.
Dr. Greenblatt chaired the Section on the History of Neurological Surgery
of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and served as president
of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences. At
present, he is the neurosurgery editor for the Journal of the History
of the Neurosciences.
