Georg Norén, M.D., Ph.D. - Research Interests

Dr. Norén received the Mahaley Clinical Research Award at a meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, in recognition of his accomplishments with acoustic neuromas. Since then, he has continued to develop and refine the gamma knife technique. For example, he has introduced fractionated gamma knife radiosurgery to improve hearing preservation in patients with acoustic neuromas. His current research on this type of tumor examines the long-term effects of gamma knife radiosurgery and the impact of imaging quality on hearing.

As for other applications of the gamma knife, Dr. Norén is evaluating its use in anterior capsulotomy to relieve obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is assessing the results of gamma knife treatment of secretory and nonsecretory pituitary adenomas as well as studying improvement of diplopia after gamma knife radiosurgery of skull base meningiomas.
