Edward G. Stopa, M.D. Research Interests
Edward Stopa, M.D. a professor (research) of pathology at Brown Medical
School, is board-certified in both anatomic pathology and neuropathology.
He directs the Neuropathology Service and the Brown Brain Bank. In addition,
he serves as a neuropathology consultant to the Rhode Island State Medical
Examiner. Dr. Stopa holds the appointment of neuropathology research affiliate
for the Human Brain Tissue Resource Center of McLean Hospital, a teaching
facility of Harvard Medical School.
Professor Stopa conducts research on brain tumors, Alzheimer’s
disease, and steroid receptors in the brain. His articles have appeared
in leading journals, including Science, the New England Journal of Medicine,
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Brain Research, Endocrinology,
and Annals of Neurology. For over fifteen years, he has been a principal
investigator or co-investigator on various NIH-funded projects. He plans
to use his 2003 T. L. L. Temple Foundation Discovery Award from the
Alzheimer’s Association to examine the role of growth factors
in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s.
